Collate: Communication 7"
New 7â from Portland outfit Collate. Theyâve got that snappy sarcastic vibe going on, with snark in the vocals, a wiry guitar tone and a simple basslines. The recording and production feels high and brittle in texture. Communication / Selective Memory should delight those who love no wave and classic post-punk. On Market Square. Limited to 300 copies in fold-over Risograph sleeve with insert.
Our take: Latest single from this Portland band on the reliable Market Square Records. Weâve been following Collate since their early days of cassette-only releases and their self-released 12â was our Record of the Week this past August, so I was excited to hear these new tracks. While you can still hear the Delta 5-style mutant funk groove driving the bus, on the whole these two tracks sound more brittle, experimental, and confrontational than the tracks on Liminal Concerns. The abrasive recording and experimental edge remind me of the Fallâs Dragnet album, but thereâs a New York no wave-style âmutant funkâ element too. As someone immersed in the hardcore scene but into more experimental sounds, this is exactly what I want to hear right now. Pity itâs so short, but until further notice Collate are in the âmust hear every note they releaseâ pile.
